Speeding motorist kills teen cyclist and sues his parents for damages to car

Madrid, Spain - A "man" was driving his luxury car over 100 miles per hour in a 55 zone and killed 17 year old Enaitz Iriondo when he pulled out from a crossroad. The teenager wasn't wearing reflective clothing and apparently didn't see the rapidly approaching Audi. The driver of the car is suing Iriondo's parents to pay for the damage to his car. If this isn't the ultimate act of inhumanity, I don't know what is. Iriondo's mother, Rosa, was shocked. "Before the lawsuit we thought the poor guy would find it hard to live the rest of his life with the thought of having caused our son's death..."

Spike Jonze' Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are was one of my favorite books as a kid. My little brother was named after the book's protagonist, Max. My favorite movie is Adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. One of my top three favorite books is A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers.

Now, in what may turn out to be the best collaboration since yeast and sugar, Dave Eggers and Spike Jonze have written a screenplay based on the children's book to be directed by Jonze. The movie is due out in October of this year. If only they could incorporate fish tacos somehow I could have all of my favorite things at once!

Bitch kills cyclist, gets 10 years.

An Arizona woman got a DUI and lost her license.
She decided to drive anyway, and chose to get hammered first.
She swerved off the road and killed a 45 year old cyclist.
A week after murdering the cyclist, she joked about with friends.
One of her friends said she should get a medal and parade
for killing "a "tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot."
She laughed. The friend admitted it was a terrible thing to say.
She said, "no it's not."
The judge didn't think it was funny.
She's going to jail for 10 1/2 years.
Should have been longer.
Negligent homicide isn't funny.

I found this abandonded surly 29er, with lock still attached to the frame (in that shady way that looks like it was lifted off a pole) it reminds me of a bike i used to see a commuter on each morning, in fact im almost sure its this one... please if you or anyone you know has had one stolen, please shoot me a message with a description of the build, or the serial number, or any info... im sure if its yours you'll have quite the info and story to go along with it. and spread this around... i really want to see this bike get back to its owner.

Made this when I got home from work and it is tasty.

Whole wheat bread cut into squares
Sliced cucumber, quick marinated in lemon juice and sprinkled with salt
Peppered turkey
Jalapeño-cilantro hummus
delish

Hummus:
1 can chick peas, washed well
2 tbsp tahini
1 small lemon, juice of
1 tbsp olive oil
pinch salt/pepper
1 jalapeño
1/4 cup cilantro

puree everything together, chill, enjoy

Are winter bike-commuters really crazy?

Often when people find out that I commute year round by bicycle, even in the winter, I'm accused of being crazy. I'm sure there are crazier people out there.

Good times.

My ride to work today was quite eventful. After yesterday's storm I had to make about 10 detours to avoid fallen trees and flooded roads. We also lost power briefly and didn't get our cable working again until moments ago. On the way back from work I accidentally rode through hub-deep water and ran over several large sticks and stumps due to my headlight's low battery. The bike lanes and trails are all completely over run with fallen limbs so I found myself riding in the grooves left by car tires when possible, and cautiously using the sidewalk/opposite lane/people's yards/levee roads when car traffic was too heavy. Every ride is an adventure.

According to the results of a study completed recently in Austin, TX, cyclists who wear helmets are 65 to 88 percent less likely to suffer head injuries in accidents. Duh.
